KENYA FALLS TO GM MAIZE PRESSURE

It is tragic that Kenya has been pushed into importing South African genetically-modified maize.

Was US ambassador Michael Ranneberger behind Uhuru Kenyatta's decision to lift import duties on maize imports three weeks ago?  The US brought pressure on Kenya (same link) to pass the inappropriately-named 'Biosafety Law' in 2009 which paved the way for the imports.

South Africa is the only African country allowing GM production.  Zambia carries the leading flag against.  In 2002, the US ambassador to the UN FAO called for Zambia's leaders to be tried for crimes against humanity for rejecting GM maize!  Zambia solved its maize crisis and is now an exporter on non-GM maize.  Kenya bought Zambian maize in 2008.  But it is more expensive than the South African rubbish.

Fact: Monsanto is an US agri-chemical giant with fingers everywhere.  Not for nothing does the Bible tell us of 'wickedness in high places' (Eph 6:12) and that the doers of evil hate the light (John 3:20).  Thank God there is nothing hidden which will not be revealed (Luke 12:2).

So let's reveal some more.  The proponents of GM food say there is no evidence they cause harm.  That is because Monsanto sits on anyone trying to conduct trials and stifles the funding.  More wickedness in high places.

But despite that, the evidence is beginning to accumulate:

Genetically Modified Foods Pose Huge Health Risk reports how nutritionalists are strongly advising against eating the stuff.

A similar article records how animals died after eating Monsanto maize engineered to contain the powerful pesticide known as 'Bt': Doctors Warn: Avoid Genetically Modified Food

The Bt pesticide is NOT killed in the gut of humans, as Monsanto promised.

And there are shocking problems in India with Bt Cotton.  Animals are dying from eating the stalks and humans are affected as well.

Will GM maize meal be labelled in Kenya?  Otherwise - and in any case - Kenyans will be human guinea pigs in this game of Genetic Roulette.

So what is wrong with genetic modification from a Christian perspective?  Firstly, we read in the book of Genesis that God has caused every organism in His creation to reproduce 'after his kind.'

Gen 1:11  And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so.
Gen 1:12  And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good.

The Bible is telling us that it was God who wrote the genetic code (or the 'DNA') for every plant, for every animal, for every human being.  When mankind interferes with this God-given genetic code, we do so at our own peril.  The Lord's judgment is likely to come upon those who play God, and those they carelessly inflict their designs upon, in the form of unintended and unforeseen consequences.

As to Monsanto's ambitions, the Bible also tells us that men will be lovers of their own selves, that evil men will want to control every aspect of our lives, even what can be bought and sold, but that God will bring judgment upon them.  'He that sitteth in the heavens will laugh', says Psalm 2:4.  'Your riches are corrupted and your garments are motheaten,' James prophesies against the rich who oppress the poor (Jas 5:2).

Farmers who have successfully grown maize in Kenya and cannot make a living because cheap imports have depressed the price are oppressed as surely as if those in power had come in the night and stolen a third of their crop.
